Record Student Participation as Chinese Radio Drama Scriptwriting Competition Opens to Primary Schools
Last Updated: 04 Jul 2025
A record number of more than 850 students across 69 educational institutions participated in this year's "Script it Right" Chinese Radio Drama Competition ("与声剧来"中文广播剧创作比赛). Minister of State for Education and Chairperson of the Committee to Promote Chinese Language Learning (CPCLL), Ms Jasmin Lau, was the Guest-of-Honour at the competition's award ceremony, which recognised student winners for their strong creative writing skills, storytelling abilities and Chinese language proficiency. The competition was jointly organised by CPCLL, UFM100.3 and Holy Innocents' High School to foster students' passion for Chinese language and storytelling. See Annex for the list of winners.
2 Into its 11th edition, the competition continues to challenge participants by stretching their creativity with narratives that are original and contemporary. These included the theme "60" (特定主题:60) in conjunction with Singapore's SG60 celebrations, the dialogue "AI really did it" (预设对白:AI真的做到了), and the sound effect of "footsteps" (特选音效:脚步声). This is also the first year where the competition was opened to upper primary schools to nurture early interest for scriptwriting and storytelling in the Chinese Language. 149 primary school students from 28 schools took part in the competition.
3 Five teams from the Primary School category (Category A) earned the Merit Awards for their outstanding scripts, while seven teams from the Secondary School, Junior College/Millennia Institute, and Polytechnic category (Category B) clinched the Top 3 and Merit Awards. As an additional highlight, UFM100.3 will bring winning Category B scripts to life as radio dramas, to be broadcast between July and August on the radio station.
4 In the lead up to the competition, notable theatre practitioners Mr Tung Ka Wai and Mr Chong Tze Chien conducted eight scriptwriting workshops between January and March 2025, which were attended by around 1,180 students. A further 44 students participated in the Voice Talent Training Camp, receiving professional voice acting guidance from UFM100.3 personalities Andrew, Cheng Yao, Kemin, Xavier and Xin Ying. In addition, 54 educators enhanced their teaching capabilities through an online workshop on radio drama and scriptwriting pedagogy, led by Mr Tung Ka Wai.
